Kine Weekly told you «This new robust ‘crooks slip out’ is peopled having a colourful diversity of essential and you can arresting letters, that, skilfully controlled of the copywriter and you will movie director, enable the film to tread liquid efficiently. It is simply to the find yourself so it actually starts to falter, nevertheless slap-right up finale rescues it regarding ‘red’. Excellently staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it will have zero great issue within the way of living off their incredibly unappealing term.» [ 8 ]
Monthly Film Bulletin told you «The film motions at the an instant rate, the fresh new dialogue is actually smooth and you will characterisations generally energetic. Richard Brody about New Yorker listed «That it terse and you will taut film noir is centered on the newest intimate and you can top-notch disputes of name character, the latest violent genius (starred by Cock Powell) trailing a chic illegal gambling enterprise. Brand new film’s publisher and you may director, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess online game, to own mortal bet, between Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), an excellent cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sibling (Nina Foch) has worked at the gambling establishment and you will dated an excellent corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic software, the brand new cast’s suavely managed body gestures away from love and you can threat, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can stylishly cocky images (plus his governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious but really in depth spectacle a low profile classic of genre.» [ 10 ]

Photo provides action and you may suspense, and you will specific short matches of humor to include preferences. Ace performances by the Manhood Powell, because the a gambling domestic overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, just like the an authorities inspector, including in the rating . Whilst the patch employs a familiar development, this new characterizations was new as well as the activities good enough so you can overbalance. Dialog are terse and you can relevant, preventing the emotional, phoney reach. Strange camera angles show up now and then to escalate attract and you may temporarily arrest the eye. Solid teamplay by the Robert Rossen, increasing given that director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, brand new journalist and representative music producer, plus helps with making this a flaccid manufacturing.» [ eleven ]

It is mainly a point of seeing Mr. Powell undergo his paces smartly while you are a giant cast regarding stars and you can actresses provide him customary service. Evelyn Keyes takes on the good little lady who brings out the new finest in him and Ellen Drew is the sleek and you may slinky vixen whom gets him towards the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually greasy while the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb do another able concert tour since a tired cops inspector whom finally shuts your situation. Significant amounts of taking and you will smoking is carried out of the all the worried.» [ twelve ]
